Hello, and welcome to the site of my final project, which I produced to complete my MA in Multi-Media Journalism at Bournemouth University.

This project investigates the surge in interest and demand for allotments and ‘growing your own’ across Britain, focusing particularly on the threats facing allotments, and more importantly on what’s being done to solve the problems on both a local and national scale.

It’s been estimated that if food imports into London stopped the city would run out of food in four days.

With waiting lists at their highest levels in decades, but demand for housing intensifying and land values soaring, what measures are being taken to ensure local communities in Britain can continue to grow their own food?

This website examines the growing pressures on allotments, and explores the various evolving schemes, policies and projects which aim to provide more land for allotments, push the creative use of unused space for growing food in urban areas, and encourage more people to support long-term sustainable food production in Britain.

A bit about me…

A deep-thinker and nature girl at heart with a passion for travel, people, places, the written word and the great outdoors. I was born in Camberley in Surrey, and achieved a BA in English from Southampton University before spending six months travelling India, China, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and America’s west coast. This final project helped me achieve a Distinction in my MA in Multi-Media Journalism at Bournemouth University.
